The lives of Andrew and Violet Smith were typical of outport Newfoundlanders in the early 1900s. In 1919, Andrew returned home to Dildo a war hero, awarded a Military Medal for his courage as a runner on the battlefield. He was renowned for harpooning horse mackerel, tending the sick and the dying, and having an unbridled zest for life. In their yellow house up along shore, Violet raised their ten children and continued to make bread and knit trigger finger mittens into her 80's. She lived to her 100th year. Together they survived the deaths of two sons and a daughter to Typhoid Fever. This Newfoundland history lesson is a tribute to them, to the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit.
